Registrations are now open for 2017’s Alice Springs Masters Games with three new sports set to spearhead a jam packed program of sport and entertainment.
NT Minister for Tourism and Culture, Lauren Moss said more than 30 years after the first event, the Alice Springs Masters Games are as popular as ever drawing back thousands of people to the Centre for the week-long festivities.
“The Territory Government recognises the important economic and social benefits the Masters Games provide to Alice Springs, which is why we have invested in major sporting infrastructure upgrades across the town to improve competitor experience and make the Games even better,” she said.
“An air-conditioned netball stadium, new flooring and lighting at the basketball centre, resurfaced tennis courts, upgrades to the Alice Springs Golf Course and revamped lawn bowl facility will all be enjoyed by Games participants in 2018.”
In announcing the opening of registrations, Ms Moss also welcomed the inclusion of Boxing, Functional Fitness and Model Aircraft Flying to the 2018 sports program.
“It’s important that the Games evolve over the years and embrace new sports such as functional fitness, which is an immensely popular fitness craze amongst all ages as well as model aircraft flying which has a community of passionate followers worldwide,” said Ms Moss.
“With 36 different sports held across seven days, an exciting program of entertainment and social events and of course the spectacular Alice Springs as the backdrop, 2018 is shaping up to be another huge Games.”
The trademark fun and frivolity that has earned the event its reputation Australia-wide as ‘The Friendly Games’ will be held from 13-20 October 2018.
