Minister welcomes native title decision

The Federal Court has handed down a determination which recognises that native title exists for the Bindunbur and Jabirr Jabirr people over an area of about 12,050 square kilometres of land on the Dampier Peninsula, in the Kimberley region.

The latest determination was made following a decision in the Federal Court in November 2017. That decision determined who holds native title on the Dampier Peninsula.

The determination provides for the recognition of exclusive native title rights and interests.

This determination marks the 80th native title determination in Western Australia.

It is the fourth determination to be announced in 2018, joining Kuruma Marthudunera Part B, Wajarri Yamatji Part B and Yi-Martuwarra Ngurrara Part A.

Western Australia continues to lead the country in the recognition of native title rights, with native title now determined over approximately 1.5 million square kilometres of the State.

The Western Australian Government is committed to working with the Bindunbur and Jabirr Jabirr native title holders to improve social and economic opportunities.
