The Lismore Swans will have first look at the new Oakes Oval playing surface when they host the Tweed Tigers this Saturday, 7 July 2018.
The $2.8 million redevelopment of the sportsground to accommodate AFL games is now complete, and also includes new grandstands, upgraded changeroom and toilet facilities, and a new electronic scoreboard.
The upgrade was funded with $1.4 million from the federal government, with AFL Queensland, Lismore Swans AFL, Lismore City Council and NSW Cricket matching the funds in cash or in-kind.
An official opening with federal and state ministers will be held later in 2018.
“The Lismore Swans AFL Sponsors Day is a fitting first occasion for the new playing surface, as a key component of the upgrade was about accommodating local and visiting AFL teams,” Lismore City Council’s Acting Manager Major Recreation and Cultural Facilities Mitch Lowe said.
“The upgrade of Oakes Oval makes it the premier sports facility in northern NSW, capable of hosting premiership AFL, rugby league, soccer and rugby union matches.
“We are looking forward to seeing how the new facilities perform and will be hosting an official opening later.”
The Lismore Swans AFL Sponsors Day includes men’s reserves at 11am, women’s seniors at 12.30pm and men’s seniors at 2.20pm.
