Young Aboriginal women empowered with skills development program

WA Regional Development Minister Alannah MacTiernan presented a $450,000 Lotterywest grant to the Broome Aboriginal Media Association.

The grant will support the Kimberley Girl, Pilbara Girl and Goldfields Girl programs for 18 months, providing tailored personal and professional skills development opportunities for Aboriginal women aged between 16 and 25.

Participants will undertake structured workshops and showcase events in contemporary culture, health and wellbeing, social and professional skills, and positive lifestyle and leadership values.

The grant will benefit past participants with ongoing support, specifically in training and employment, but also with respect to maintaining their social and emotional wellbeing.

Since 2004, 473 participants have gone through the program with up to another 28 participants attending Kimberley Girl activities in September 2018 and October 2018.

The WA Government, through Lotterywest, has provided more than $1.3 million in funding to the Broome Aboriginal Media Association since 1998.
